Enhanced Conversions

Automatically recover 15-20% of lost Google Ads conversions using hashed first-party customer data from Shopify checkout.

Quick Answer

Enhanced Conversions recover 15-20% of lost Google Ads conversion data by sending hashed first-party customer information (email, phone, address) from Shopify checkout to Google. ScaleUp enables this automatically with 1-click setup — no GTM or manual configuration required.

The Problem: Cookies Are Failing

Standard Google Ads conversion tracking relies on cookies to connect ad clicks to purchases. When a shopper clicks your ad, Google drops a cookie. When they buy, the cookie fires and Google counts the conversion. Simple enough — except cookies are increasingly unreliable.

Safari restricts third-party cookies entirely and limits first-party cookies to 7 days. Firefox blocks known tracking cookies by default. Chrome users running ad blockers (over 30% of desktop users) strip tracking cookies before they ever set. Mobile browsers on iOS enforce Intelligent Tracking Prevention across the board.

The result: standard pixel-only tracking misses 15-20% of actual conversions. Those are real sales your store completed, but Google Ads never sees them. Your reported ROAS looks worse than reality, and Smart Bidding makes decisions based on incomplete data.

The Data Gap Is Growing

As browser privacy restrictions tighten and ad blocker usage increases, the gap between actual conversions and tracked conversions widens every quarter. Stores relying solely on cookie-based tracking are falling further behind.

How ScaleUp Solves It

ScaleUp automatically enables Google Ads Enhanced Conversions on your Shopify store. When a customer completes a purchase, ScaleUp captures the first-party data they entered at checkout — email address, phone number, and shipping address — hashes it using SHA-256 encryption, and sends the hashed values to Google alongside the standard conversion event.

Google then matches these hashed identifiers against its database of signed-in users. If a match is found, the conversion is attributed back to the original ad click — even if the tracking cookie was blocked, expired, or deleted. The raw customer data never leaves your store; only irreversible hash strings are transmitted.

This happens automatically for every purchase. There is no manual configuration, no GTM setup, and no ongoing maintenance. ScaleUp handles the field mapping, hashing, and data formatting that Google requires.

Privacy-Safe by Design

All customer data is hashed with SHA-256 before transmission. Google receives a 64-character hexadecimal string — not the actual email or phone number. This one-way hash cannot be reversed, making it compatible with GDPR, CCPA, and other privacy regulations when paired with proper consent.

Technical Details: How the Data Flows

Understanding the data flow helps you verify that Enhanced Conversions are working correctly and troubleshoot any issues that arise.

Note

Enhanced Conversions supplement cookie-based tracking rather than replacing it. When cookies work, Google uses them. When they fail, the hashed customer data serves as a fallback. You get redundancy in your tracking, not a different tracking method.

1

Customer completes Shopify checkout

The customer enters their email, name, phone number, and shipping address as part of the standard Shopify checkout process. This is first-party data — information voluntarily provided to your store.

2

ScaleUp captures and hashes the data

ScaleUp reads the checkout data from Shopify's event system and applies SHA-256 hashing to each field individually. The email address, phone number, first name, last name, street address, city, state, postal code, and country are all hashed separately.

3

Hashed data is sent with the conversion event

The hashed values are included in the Google Ads conversion tag payload alongside the transaction ID, conversion value, and currency. Google receives both the standard conversion data and the Enhanced Conversion data in a single request.

4

Google matches and attributes the conversion

Google compares the hashed identifiers against its signed-in user database. If there is a match, the conversion is attributed to the original ad click. If the cookie also worked, Google uses both signals for higher-confidence attribution.

Setup: 1-Click vs. Manual GTM

There are two ways to enable Enhanced Conversions on Shopify. The manual approach involves Google Tag Manager and typically takes 2-4 hours of technical work. The automated approach through ScaleUp takes about 5 minutes.

With GTM, you need to enable Enhanced Conversions in your Google Ads conversion settings, create a user-provided data variable in GTM that maps to Shopify's checkout fields, configure the hashing correctly, and then test with Tag Assistant to verify the data is being sent in the right format. Common pitfalls include mapping the wrong email field, incorrect hashing configuration, and missing the enablement step in Google Ads itself.

With ScaleUp, Enhanced Conversions are enabled as part of the standard installation. The app already knows Shopify's data structure, handles the SHA-256 hashing automatically, formats the data exactly how Google expects it, and includes built-in verification that the setup is working correctly.

Manual GTM Setup

2-4 hours of technical work. Requires GTM expertise, SHA-256 hashing configuration, field mapping, and manual verification via Tag Assistant. Risk of silent failures if misconfigured.

ScaleUp Automated Setup

5 minutes, 1-click installation. Automatic field mapping, SHA-256 hashing, data formatting, and ongoing verification. No GTM or coding required.

Next Steps

Enhanced Conversions are no longer optional for serious Google Ads advertisers. With cookie-based tracking losing reliability every quarter, first-party data matching is the foundation of accurate conversion measurement going forward.

If you are not running Enhanced Conversions today, you are underreporting conversions by 15-20% and giving Google's Smart Bidding algorithm incomplete data to work with. The fix takes 5 minutes with ScaleUp — install the app, connect your Google Ads account, and Enhanced Conversions are enabled automatically.
